In 2008, thirty four schools from London are partnered with a school from either Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Mexico or South Africa. Each partnership shares a collaborative workspace on this platform categorized by a River theme. Each participating school has access to a workshop project page to document their workshop activities.

Key curriculum areas

Rivers of the World aims to contribute to a number of key curriculum areas:

  • Art and Design
  • ICT (Information Computer Technology)
  • History

The project can also be applied to inform:

  • Geography
  • English

Stages to the Rivers of the World project

There are a number of stages to the Rivers of the World project:

  1. Schools in London are selected by Thames Festival.
  2. Schools from the partner cities overseas are selected by the local British Council office.
  3. The London schools are paired with an overseas school by the Thames Festival team. Work developed as part of this project can form part of the British Council’s International School Award.
  4. Educational resource material about the rivers is posted on www.thamesfestival.org.
  5. The paired schools study their river and its significance to their urban environment. The pupils’ findings provide inspiration for drawings, paintings and other media.
  6. During a number of workshop sessions, arts facilitators help the class group to create an artwork inspired by their study in the style of a local contemporary artist or design style.
  7. The artworks are transferred to computer, formatted to an agreed digital specification and sent to Thames Festival and to the other participating cities.
  8. A catalogue and other supporting information is written, designed and printed.
  9. The artworks are printed and displayed publicly.
  10. After their public display, the artworks can be returned to the participating schools for display in their school environment.
