Ursuline High School workshop page

The history behind Ursuline
In the beginning there were 8 pupils. The Ursuline high school was founded from forest Gate in 1892 when four nuns came to establish a tiny school in a private house in worple road. At that time it was a private boarding school, but it then became a voluntary-aided grammar school in 1944. The Ursuline was founded by Saint Angela Merici who had lived in Italy in the 16th Century. There are now over 1300 pupils in the school.
Extra Information on Ursuline

There are branches of ursuline all over the world. Our school logo 'Serviam', means To Serve. Ursuline High has the highest education in merton. Because we are a business and enterprise school, there are many opportunities for us, for example this project we are doing now. We also get opportunities to help businesses around London and Merton. There is always an opportunity for everyone to be involved within the school. We have an enterprise week usually in July, where we have a wide variety of Business and Enterprise activities, so there are so many ways to get involved.

Our jane tars project

We learnt many things about Jane tars. Jane tars were women who dressed as men to get on board ships when they were about to set sail. The reason the are 'Jane Tars' is because 'Jack Tar' is a slang expression for any English sailor because they used to tar their hats to make them waterproof for the voyage. The reasons that the Women would dress as men where that they wouldn't get any money from their fathers. If their fathers went to war on ships and died, the money would be passed down to a brother or a first cousin. Women never used to get anything, so they would come on board ship dressed in mens clothes so they could escape marriage of someone they didnt know. They also went on the ships to be with their husbands or boyfriends. and at the end of the voyage, when retired, got a pension which was a fair amount of money in those days. The problem was that if someone got injured they would have to be stripped so they could be healed or treated. Many women tried to avoid injuries, but one lady named Hannah snell had an injury to both legs. After one year in hospital and still undiscovered Hannah continued to serve on the 'Tartar and the Eltham'. It was not until 1750 she revealed herself after she was paid off of course ( she was paid the same amount of money a male sailor would have been paid) She died in 1792.

Mary Lacy used the name of William Chandler. In 1759 she ran away from home dressed in mens clothes and at the time she didn't know what to do next as she only had a little amount of money from working as a domestic servant at the age of 12. In May she sailed on the 'Sandwich' in 1759 in disguise as a man. She served as an able seaman for 12 years before her health forced her to retire and become a shipwright (someone who builds ships) By the end of 1771 she applied for her pension and sucssesfully got her pension even though she listed her name as Mary Lacy.
