"Galo da Madrugada" and "Galinha D'água" - Carnival
The River
Capibaribe is symbol of our culture and goes through important cities like Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, Toritama, Limoeiro, Paudalho, São Lourenço da Mata, Camaragibe and Recife. It determines the urban area of Recife, a city with beautiful scenery of bridges and water.
Capibaribe has contributed to the culture and understanding of our people. Many important people were influenced by the river: João Cabral de Mello Neto, Manuel Bandeira, Gilberto Freyre, Josué de Castro, Manuel de Correia Andrade, Chico Science, among others that mentioned the river with its magnitude, condition and relation with the humans.
Music and Capibaribe are strongly together. Frevo stands to the Capibaribe River like jazz to the Mississipi”. That sentence from Zé da Flauta, a prominent member of the Pernambucana music. In the same way as the mighty waters of the Mississipi irrigate different musical styles which flow into all over the planet, the course of the Capibaribe feeds many tributaries that convey the rhythms of Brazil’s northeastern region. Among them, the rhythm most frequently associated to the state of Pernambuco is probably Frevo, which completed its 100th anniversary of existence – and resistance – in 2007.
There is also a musical movement inspired by the mangroves of Capibaribe. It was created in 1994 by Chico Science and Nação Zumbi, which became known as Mangue Beat. The musician Chico Science was worried about Capibaribe’s situation and started defending the river and the mangrove. He had a very intimate relationship with the mangroves of Capibaribe.
The School
Escola Estadual Maciel Pinheiro is located in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.
Our school is next to the Capibaribe and the river is very familiar to the students. The school physical structure shows its historical origins of "Casa Grande do Engenho da Torre”. It’s really nice and interesting!
Art Workshop
The workshop has just begun!
Students talked about the river and they expressed their relationship with the Capibaribe through drawings.
The idea of urban intervention has been part of the workshops. The students went to Capibar to start their experience with an urban intervention. They learned more things about the river and threw the boats they had created with organic paper on the river.
Students worked a lot to present a nice urban intervention
Exhibition
"Capibaribe" is a symbol of our culture. As the carnival is linked to the river, it was represented by the students to remember the importance of the river to our city.
