The River Thames by Carly and Danielle
The Thames is the most well known river in England flowing through London. It is 215 miles long therefore it's the longest river in England. The Thames has been frozen over at various times, the earliest recorded occasion being AD 1150. More than 100 fish species have been recorded in the Thames estuary over the past 30 years, many of these in the river within London. The story of the Thames goes back to over 30 million years ago when the river was once a branch of the River Rhine, because Britain was not an island. Because of its amazing history, the River Thames is now talked about over the world.
The Romans in London by Claire and Maryam N
The Romans invaded England in 43AD (led by Emperor Claudius), and founded the city where modern-day London is in 47AD.
London was built where the Thames was narrow enough to build a bridge, but deep enough to handle marine vessels. They built a massive pier base for a bridge, close to the modern London Bridge.
Londinium was almost certainly inhabited by many businessmen when it was first built, as the busy river-crossing made it perfect for traders and businessmen from Europe to set up business there.
Latin was the official language in those times, as confirmed by inscriptions and graffiti found by archaeologists. It is also thought that many local people spoke Brythonic (a Celtic speech similar to Welsh) and even that an early version of English was being spoken in the south of Britain at the time Londinium was built.
In about 60AD, the Iceni destroyed the city, led by their queen Boudica. At this time Gaius Suetonius Paulinus had to decide whether to stand and fight or abandon Londinium. Eventually, due to the inferior number of his army forced him to abandon Londinium to save the province.
After this Londinium was rebuilt as a planned Roman city, and recovered after about 10 years. Over the next few decades, Londinium expanded quickly, and rapidly became Roman Britan's largest city. By the end of the century, Londinium had replaced Colchester as the capital of Britannia.
By the middle of the century Londinium boasted major public buildings, including the largest basilica (basic Christian or medieval church) north of the Alps, a governor's palace, temples, bath houses and a large fort for the city garrison. The Romans also went on to build a port and the London wall, which would go on to show Londinium's boundaries for centuries.
How did we make our coins?
Firstly, we looked at examples of Roman style coins and started to think about the patterns, text and images that we could include in our own designs. We decided on the Roman theme because our city, London, was first named by the Romans as Londinium.
Secondly, we made CD-sized templates on paper and drew our designs for both heads and tails sides for our coins. Some people did an authentic style coin which involved the original Roman designs, whilst others did a Roman stlye with modern ideas to relate to the river Thames.
Thirdly, we transferred our designs onto a circular piece of embossing foil using a sharp object such as a compass.
As we talk we are finishing off our piece by finding the perfect materials and layout to present our work on.

Today after school we've got a talent show going on - Manor's Got Talent. Really excited about it! Girls in our school will act, sing, dance, and show any other talents they have. We will try and upload images if we can manage to get some.
We're mostly finished with our coins now, and are trying to decide on a layout for the display. The coins are looking great, which is a relief!

Today we went around our school taking pictures that we thought would show what our school looks like and also different things that we do.

There are many clubs here at NMBEC such as the science, animation, different sports, film and many more the list goes on. Our favourite club tae-kwondo where sonu conviently injured herself (broke her arm while trying to fight the evil ninjas of the east). not really her partner "accidently" (hint hint) tripped her over! (sonu does not know that i Amina wrote this. she wasn't looking!)
Thank you reading,
This is Amina and Sonu from the deeply disguised NMBEC IT room reporting. (Egypt Rocks!)
