Our School

My School is called London Nautical and is in central London. We are right beside the Thames and can see it from our school. Our school is a nautical school and we do sailing in the Docklands. The school was founded when the Titanic sank because it wanted to improve sea safety among everyday people.. The school used to train boys who wanted to become sailors to swim and be safe on a ship. Our school is really unique.

On the 22nd May 2008 I was doing some art with Miss Lucking.
In the art workshop, Miss Lucking introduced two artists called Pete and Shona. Pete and Shona explained the project to us and the technique we would need to make a design for our medals. Once we had chosen our design we marked it on the gold foil. When we finished we gave our medals to Pete and he took a picture of our medals with a 8 mega pixel camera.

Yesterday I managed to make my medal by, making a template for the picture that would be on my medal. I had to make quite a few of them to see which would look best on the medal. In the end I decided to do a ship on the sea, which actually proved to be the best to do. After that I had to do it once again and then a border which made it stand out more and look better.
I found out that with designing there are lots of steps to progress to the making part - the foil. It was not so easy but worth it in the end.

On 22nd May 2008 Miss Lucking, my teacher, introduced two artists from the Thames Festival called Pete and Shona. They told us that we would be designing a medal about river culture on the Thames but, my final image was of the Taj Mahal being transported by barge up the River Thames!.
Then I made my own name out of metal and I really enjoyed the project since the start.

When Pete and Shona came to our school we brainstormed ideas about a cultural river,we did that for about five minutes and then they told us what our project was going to be on a cultural river.
I started to scan the pictures and I came across an image of the Cutty Sark. I started to draw the ship then Shona said to place all of the pictures on the table and then we started to talk about the pictures for another five minutes.
Pete noticed my drawing of a ship and said to start my medal as my drawing was good enough already, so I finished off my drawing and Pete came and said that I could start to transfer my drawing onto my metal.
When I finished transferring my drawing onto my metal I took my metal up to Pete and he said that it was brilliant but he could not see the difference between the sails and the rigging and then he sent me to Shona and she suggested that I use a handy little piece of metal that will help me draw straight neat lines to make the sails stand out. I did this and Shona and Pete said that I had finished and that I could complete it tomorrow with the ribbons and to write my name on the piece of metal to identify that it is
mine.
I liked the project. It was good because I haven't used gold foil before and I liked learning this new technique.

In the worshop for the Thames Festival Pete and Shona introduced the medal project.
At first I needed to draw a circle. That circle was the drawing limit. It was the size of a CD. When we drew out our circle we drew all our ideas in different circles and then we picked the one we like the best.
I drew one of a London Eye pod and I thought it was the best one so I chose it. Pete and Shona agreed with me and told me that those lines were very simple and that was good because complicate lines were hard to draw on metal. Next we added details to our designs and we had to check with Pete and Shona if they were ready to be put on metal.
If they were ready we had to trace the picture with a sharp pencil onto the metal. When we were finished we had to see if they were visible enough and mine was so Pete and Shona told me I could put my ribbon on tomorrow.
I really enjoyed this project as we got to do a lot more art than usual.

Yesterday on 22nd May my teacher Miss Lucking introduced
two artists from the Thames Festival called Pete and Shona.
They told us what is happening at the Thames Festival this year then showed us some pictures from the last 2 years. This year our project was about river culture and we made a medal about the Thames e.g. I chose something the Cutty Sark.
On 23rd May I made my own label for the medal. And I really really enjoyed it.

Christopher Lewis,
Yesterday in the Thames Festival workshop we met two artists called Shona and Pete then we discussed our ideas about a cultural river and showed our work from our prep lesson with Miss Lucking.
We started sketching out ideas until we found something we were happy with, then we got our gold metal and we drew our designs on to the metal. It was very hard but it was a good experience.

The Thames Festival 2008
FIRST
we made a brainstorm on A CULTURAL RIVER”.WE HAD IDEAS FROM TRANSPORT TO OYSTERS.

THEN
WE SKETCHED , MOSTLY BULIDINGS OF THINGS WE THOUGHT REPRESENTED “A CULTURAL RIVER”

NEXT
WHEN WE FINALY PERFECTED OUR SKETCHES.WE STUCK THEM ONTO GOLDEN FOIL.

AFTER THAT
WE SHARPENED OUR PENCILS, AND PRESSED ON THE PAPER.THE DRAWINGS APPEARED ON THE GOLD MAKING MEDALS.

MY COMMENTS
I THOUGHT THE PROJECT WAS VERY MANIC , BUT STILL VERY FUN , EVEN THOUGH I KEPT MESSING UP MY SKETCHES , I FINALY MADE A VERY GOOD MEDAL I WAS PROUD OF

Thames Festival 2008 When Pete & Shona came in they told us what we will be doing. After that I traced around a disc twice to make two circles for our designs. Then in the circles we had to draw a famous sight which is on the River Thames. In my first circle I drew St. Paul’s Cathedral, in my second circle I drew the gherkin. I traced around the disc two more times, in those circles I drew the London Eye in the first circle & the Millennium Dome in the second circle. My final design was St. Paul’s Cathedral. After I finished that I did a name tag. Callum Carr

I enjoyed the project and I am pleased with my medal (Boris J. on his bike).
If I get a chance to do this again I would say yes everytime but I would work harder and get my medal done quicker.
Here is what I did...
At the start we brainstormed things about the river Thames.
Next:
1. I drew a circle of the size of a cd.
2. I chose a design from the free papers - the new London Mayor - Boris Johnson on his bike.
3. Then I drew a few different designs until I was happy (in my case 4 different designs).
4. Next I changed his hair (so its more Borisy)!
5. Then I stuck the gold foil on the back of the paper.
6. I traced the picture.
7. Then I took the gold foil off the paper.
8. Then I went over Boris to make him stand out.
9. I made my name tag.
10. I made my ribbon.
11. Then I made a ribbon for my friend.
12. Then I decided I liked my friend's ribbon better so I swapped them!

Thanks to all the teachers who help me and my friends!

The Thames Festival this year provided a great opportunity for our Keystage Three pupils to work together with year Nine assisting the year Seven in the project run by professional artists Pete and Shona.
The pupils were really excited about producing individual artworks, developing on their learning in design and enriching their drawing skills.
The project theme was "A Cultural River" and as preparation for the workshop we had a brainstorming session and a drawing lab in school.
Pete and Shona's medal workshop really caught the boy's imaginations and they produced lots of designs based on the cultural diversity of our river.
The processes involved built on their learning and the final medals were fantastic with their ribbons added.
Many thanks to Pete, Shona and Kate for all their hard work.

Thames Festival 2008

First we had a presentation on the Thames festival
and started to design some medals.

Then we had a break.

After we continued to draw our designs and started our final design.

Finally we made our medals and name tags.

Also I enjoyed working with Kate, Shona and Pete. Thank you

Step1: We brainstormed things on the board to give us ideas and help us.

Step2: We each got a piece of paper and used a disk and used the outline as a template then in the circle we drew rough ideas.

Step3: We came up with our final ideas and drew them then we got a bit of gold foil metal stuff and put it under the paper with our drawing on it then went over it again so it would show on the foil.

Step4: Then we took the paper away and went over the silver side of the foil so it would show more and create a kind of shadow.

Step5: We made our name tags to put on our medals we did the same thing we did to make our medals but put our name on it instead.

My favourite part of the workshop is making and drawing the designs for the medals.
